STM Online Databases
STM subscribes to a number of research databases that are available for our students in school and at home through remote access.

Why use electronic databases vs. the Internet?

• Electronic databases are only accessed by those paying a subscription fee.
• Information contained in databases has authority similar to that of an encyclopedia. Information is reviewed and checked for accuracy.
• Anyone can put up a web page and there is no guarantee the information is accurate.
• While an Internet search on a search engine such as Google may generate 100,000 hits, a search on a database will generate much fewer hits.
• Databases contain access to newspapers, magazines, encyclopedias, journals, books, radio and TV transcripts that are not available to the general public via an Internet search.
• Many databases contain prescreened web links to suitable sites for students.

The Junior Reference Collection would be a good source for information on people, both historical and contemporary, and also places.

The Gale Junior Reference Collection contains on-line versions of Gale’s various UXL Encyclopedias. It includes Biographies, Junior Discovering Authors, Worldmark Encyclopedia of Canadian Provinces, Nations and States, Encyclopedia of World Culture, Multicultural, Science and Merriam Webster’s Collegiate, Biographical and Geographical Dictionary.

When utilizing EBSCO you can search all the databases or one depending on your search topic. EBSCO would be a great resource for current event articles, learn the basics about a particular animal or read about diseases and their treatment.

The EBSCO research databases contains the following databases:

• Middle Search Plus: 150 popular magazines for middle & high school. Many are full text. Full text magazines date as far back as 1990.
• Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia: over 25,000 articles. Contains same information as a print encyclopedia. Encyclopedias are great place to start your research.
• EBSCO Animals: Information on animals including nature and habitat of animals.
• Primary Search: 50 magazines for elementary school children.
• Newspaper Source: Selected full text for over 200 regional U.S. newspapers, international newspapers and newswires. Updated daily.
• Professional Development Collection: resource for teachers that contain 515 full text journals (including 340 peer reviewed titles) Focus on education.
• ERIC : Educational Resource Information Center- resource for teachers
• Health Source: Consumer Edition: information on health topics including medical science, nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health.

You will have to register during your first use. After you register at home, click on http://go.grolier.com to access the site. You should not have to enter your username or password again after registration unless you move to a different workstation.

Grolier Online is contains the following databases:

• Encyclopedia Americana Online: On-line version of the acclaimed print encyclopedia, it contains over 45,000 articles. You can also obtain information about current new events from the Americana Journal. The Grolier Internet index has thousands of prescreened web sites.
• Multimedia Encyclopedia Online:This ecylopedia ia based on Academic American Encyclopedia. It includes a monthly magazine called “Brain Jam”. There is an interactive atlas and timeline.
• New Book of Knowledge Online: This contains a complete encyclopedia. NMK News highlights weekly current event stories. Always includes an “Encyclopedia Spotlight” such as the Middle Ages, the symphony, etc.
• New Book of Popular Science: Ccovers fields such as science technology and medicine. There are many visuals to go along with the 400 articles including illustrations and maps. This database offers SciClopedia – an encyclopedia with a search engine, Skywatch – a stargazer primer & Sciezone – games, puzzles & brain teasers.
• Lands and Peoples: This online encylopedia is built around the print version. Contains 300 articles on continets, countries, regions, states and provinces. In each article you’ll find a table of contents, Facts & figures, Net Links, Selected Readings, Maps and Flags.
