Note from Mrs. Collis

Summer uniform "sneakers" - Mid-rise or hightop sneakers are not acceptable.    Please be sure that the shoes you purchase are the normal-style sneaker and that they don't display a lot of color on the shoe or the sole.  The handbook guidelines should be clear, but if you have a question, I'd be happy to look at the shoes you purchase before your child wears them in case you need to return them.

Summer uniform socks - The socks must raise above the ankle.  Students often wear the "sport socks" or "quarter" socks and these simply do not look good.  As a matter of fact, the sport socks often make it appear as if the student has no socks on at all!  Please be sure that you purchase " crew" socks for your child.  Sock packages identify whether or not they are crew socks.  Please advise your child that crew socks are also not allowed to be "tucked down over their foot inside the shoe" so as to resemble sport socks.  In grades 4-8 detentions are issued for students who violate the uniform policy.  Students in lower grades generally are not as problematic as those in the upper grades, but if there is a uniform violation, we will ask you to purchase the correct item.

We appreciate the efforts of everyone to work together to have our students look neat and polished because after all, there is a reason that the attire is called a "uniform."   Wouldn't you agree?

Pants and shorts are to be worn at the natural waistline. T-shirts with slogans or with sleeves longer than the uniform shirt are unacceptable. Please replace items that wear out.

Please note: Because of the unique and constantly changing nature of fashion, the school has reserved the right to classify any style of dress, grooming or appearance inappropriate.

During the months when the winter uniform is required, shorts may not be worn on out of uniform days.

If a teacher finds a student to be dressed inappropriately, the school will contact the parents of the student and request that the child be picked up and taken home, or the appropriate item(s) be brought to school so the student may change.

Please be sure that all belongings are labeled with your child’s name.

Hair

Unusual or dyed hairstyles are not permitted. Girls are not permitted to wear chopsticks/knitting needles or hair pins to put hair up. All boys’ hair should be cut, not pushed back, to NOT exceed the eyebrows, or the top of the shirt collar, or top of the ears. No ponytails or side burns are permitted for boys.

PLEASE NOTE: Anything that is a distraction to learning (i.e. nail polish, hair styles and accessories) will not be tolerated and will be dealt with on an individual basis. Clear nail polish is acceptable. ONLY 8 th grade girls may wear pale lipstick and a reasonable amount of make-up.

Dress Code For Out of Uniform Days

When an out of uniform day is announced, or a student comes out of uniform for his/her birthday, the student(s) are expected to be neat and well groomed and dressed appropriately.

Skirts, skorts and jumpers are to be worn 4 inches from the top of the knee (when kneeling down) or longer. Shorts are not to be shorter then 4 inches above the knee (when kneeling down), nor should they measure below the knee.

Denim jeans or casual slacks are permitted, but should be sized appropriately and should not be torn or worn out.

Students are not allowed to wear tank tops, spaghetti strap tops, strapless tops, halter tops, mesh or see-through tops or short shorts. Backless shoes (clogs, Birkenstocks, crocs, e.g.), beach shoes, flip-flops, sports sandals, Heelys or any other type of skate shoe are not permitted. T-shirts/shirts with advertising that does not promote the Christian values taught at St. Thomas More School are also not allowed.

The students’ shoes on an out of uniform day must comply with the guidelines stated in the STM handbook. The heels of the shoes should not exceed 1 inch. If a student has physical education on an out of uniform day, they must have shoes appropriate for the class.

Students are not allowed to wear hats indoors during the school day.

Scout Uniforms/Basketball Game Days

On Scout meeting days-all scouts must be in full scout uniform (pants, skirts, shirts, etc.) Jeans are NOTpart of the scout uniform. If your troop wears only a vest, they may wear this over their school uniform.

If you are on a Basketball team, on Fridays before a Saturday game, you may wear your team warm-up shirt (Navy shirt with you name on the back) and khaki pants. Jeans are not allowed. You may wear a white long sleeve shirt underneath the navy shirt on colder days. Exception: Students are expected to wear dress uniforms on Mass days.
