On the way home from school, you think about walking your new dog, Cryptom.  When you get home you find out that Cryptom has disappeared!  All you find is a ticket stub to Italy and a note written in code!

When you are done with the web quest you will

·         Be a better multiplier

·         Save Cryptom

And learn about cool codes and countries!

Task

You, the average 4th grader must travel around the world, to solve a mystery involving lots of cool math and codes because somebody or something has taken your new puppy, Cryptom.  Once you find Cryptom you will have saved the day and can get to take him to the park to play! =)

Process

Ok, let’s get started and find Cryptom!

  1. First you need to play three Math games to practice your math skills before you rescue Cryptom.  The links to the games can be found below in blue underlined writing.  http://www.aaaknow.com/g39b_mx1.htm#section2 http://aplusmath.com/games/matho/MultMatho.html  http://www.ezschool.com/Games/G3-G6Addition.html
  2. Ok, now you are ready to decode the note you found.   click here to decode the note
  3. Click here to see the note decoded, but don't peek until you have really tried to decode the note!
  4. The click on the link and scroll down to the part that says population. Read the part that says how many people live there.  Remember the number! http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/rs.html
  5. Whoa! I just received a phone call from Cryptom’s kidnappers. They said that the population of Russia doubles every year. If you figure out what the population will be in 2006 they’ll give back Cryptom!!
  6. So use the calculator in the computer (Start, All Programs, Accessories, Calculator) and multiply the number that I told you to remember by 2.
Once you’ve done that click on the link at the bottom of the evaluation section
