Introduction

Welcome to the coldest place in the world! Antarctica! You are here to study math with the  Emperor penguins! Be sure to bring a jacket!

Task

When you finish this math web quest, you are likely to have a better and fuller understanding of math and the world around you.  You will know how to:

Process

Before you begin, you can brush up on your multiplication facts at AAA Math

Keep Scrolling down to have fun on the webquest! Remember, don’t scroll down too far, only go down as far as you need to finish the problem. Once you have finished a problem, click the given link at the bottom of the problem to find the answer, but only once you've finished the problem.

Today, we will review to do simple multiplication. Since you are in fourth grade, you probably have been dealing with multiplication for a while, right? Well, you will need your multiplication skills today as you are going to help the penguins build an igloo!

Building the Igloo: Step 1: Finding Prices

First, you have to order the blocks from the Penguin Manufacturing Co.

The blocks cost 5 penguin-dollars each. You need 10 blocks to build the igloo.

So, use multiplication to figure this out:

If that problem seems to big for you to solve, let's use picture to help you solve this problem.
Count each of the following ice cubes, and add then up, being they are 5 dollars each...

If you can't add them up in your head, then just count ten times by fives. That should be pretty easy.

5,10,15,20,15,30...and so on and so on.

To see the correct price, click this, but only once you have finished counting

HURRAH! You added up the price of the blocks, which is the exact same as 10 X 5

See? Multiplication can be very, very fun. Now, it's time to put our igloo together.

Building the Igloo: Step 2: Finding Area

Ok, now we have to find the area of each block. Each block has a width of  2 feet, and a length of 4 feet. Look below:

Finding the area of the block is easy peezy. All you have to do is multiply the length (4) by the width (2).

So, your problem looks like this:

If you've done multiplication before, this is very easy. Just think 2 groups of four...

If you cant do 2x4 in your head, just count up the black dots.

The answer is 8. So the area of the blocks therefore is 8! See? That was very easy. Now lets find the area of all the blocks. This may be a little tricky.

Let's think. If their are ten blocks, and each have an area of 8, our problem looks like this

If you don't think you can handle that problem, then we can once again count up the ice blocks:

So, 8+8+8+8+8+8+8+8+8+8, or 8x10, comes out as...

Click this to find the answer...

HURRAH! Now that you have found the area, lets build the igloo!

Zippity Do Dah! Now you are done with building the igloo!

Fishing for the Penguins: Equipment

The first thing we need for fishing is the equipment. We need:

Ok, so now we gotta add up the prices of all the equipment. So, the problem looks like this:

If you have trouble doing the problem in your head, you might want to work it out on a separate sheet of paper...
