Pirate Treasure!!!
A Measurement
Webquest for 5th Grade
Designed by Sarah

Happily
humming, you
sit it
your tree house
while
scanning the ground with your brand-new telescope. Hmm… what is that
guy
dressed up as a pirate doing with an empty bottle? Why is there a paper
inside?
And, most importantly, why does it say something about pirate
treasure?!?!
When
you are through
with
this webquest, you will
be able to answer the following question: How do you convert fennels,
rods,
chains, and links into modern-day measurements?
Task
You
have
found the treasure
map of Anne Bonny. You need to use all the cunning and skill you
possess in
order to find the treasure. The map was made sometime around 1700, so
the
measurements are quite odd, including things such as chains, rods, and
fennels,
but all you can measure in is the modern measurements (miles, feet,
meters, and
so on)! If pirate treasure wasn’t the prize, you would probably throw
the map
away. Hang on! The secret treasure of Anne Bonny could be yours! Let’s
go
treasure hunting!!!
Process
Okay! We need to
get started
in order to finish, possibly with millions of dollars. Here is what to
do:
- Click
on the treasure map link at the top of the page.
- You
need to get to the Camuy
Cave entrance,
exactly 1 league away. See a problem?
- Go here and put
1 in the quantity box, click on league (US statute) in the "From" column and mile (international) in the "To" column. Click on convert and round the answer to the
closest whole number. Fill in the blank below with the number.
- Click
on the dot ____ miles south from the red X. If you do this correctly, you
will find
another map.
- Find
the dot 3 Ramden links north from the red X on this map.
Don’t forget to use the compass and scale! Click here to find how many Ramden links there are in a foot. Just click on link (Ramden, engineer) in the "From" column and foot (international, US) in the "To" column
- You
have reached the treasure!
Evaluation
Awesome
Job!!!
You’ve now
(hopefully) done the following:
1.
You
actually
worked everything out instead of clicking randomly around.
2.
You
completed
everything without giving up.
3.
You learned
something you didn’t know.
4.
You
had fun!
Give
yourself a pat on the back and a score of 1-10, 1 being worst, of how
well you
did. Be honest! The best you can get is 40 points. I hope you got all
of them!
Conclusion
Ye
already have the treasure. It be math! Now be off with ye and leave me
to my
rest. Signed,
Anne
Bonny the Great
