The definition of an icon is the fact that the word comes from the Greek language meaning simple image. The technique used to make an icon is to use egg tempera and to use gold on the icon. But there are rules to creating an icon. The rules are that it has to depict a holy figure or those that show scenes from the life of that holy figure. |

Matthew 1:18 18 Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. |

The actions in this icon are clearly shown by the way Mary is sitting. Her torso is facing towards Joseph and baby Jesus while her legs are facing away from Joseph and baby Jesus. This probably represents that they are not having a good marriage. Also instead of holding baby Jesus they are presenting him to the world. |

My response to studying these icons was that I found it very interesting. The teachers always had a positive attitude towards the students and liked to throw in a few really good laughs. I enjoyed the class even though it was only one quarter in length. |
