Patrols
At St. Thomas More, both morning and afternoon dismissals
are staffed by middle school students. Students who participate
in Patrols are considered school leaders and earn More Award hours
for their service to our school. Participation in Patrols is through
application and a student may not have any failing grades or check
marks on their report card, specifically in conduct, if they are
applying for Patrols.
The Morning
Patrol starts its duty at 8:00 a.m. and works till 8:25
a.m. 5th through 8th grade students may apply for Morning Patrol.
The Morning
Patrol should open the door for you and assist your child out of
the car. If for some reason you must park, (i.e. if your child has
a big project to carry into school, or he/she is injured in some
way), the Patrol will cross you and your child only at the crosswalk
by the breezeway. Unless your child is in need of special
consideration, you should drop her/him at the sidewalk.
The Afternoon
Patrol works from 3:00 to approximately 3:25 and 6th through
8th grade students can apply for this duty. Dismissal can be hectic
and we strive to keep all concerned safe, so please
follow their directions and abide by what Patrols directs you to
do. Members of Patrols are our children who are doing
a service to the entire school community under the direction of
the school administration and you must follow Patrols' instructions
so that everyone’s safety is assured.
After
School Activities and Organizations
St. Thomas More Catholic School does not casually endorse or promote extracurricular programs by allowing brochures, advertisements etc…to be displayed in the school or distributed to the study body.
In order to have your program endorsed, you must interview with St. Thomas More School administration, and present a recent background screening on the provider/s of the services who will be working with children. Further recommendations and/or visits to the program site may be required. Once we have this information school officials will make a decision.
Karate
Classes
Karate classes are conducted in the gym after school. Contact
the office for more information.
Chess
Club
The Chess Club will be organized by sessions again this year. There will be a strict limit of 12 students
per session. In order to plan these sessions, we need a list, at the beginning of the year, of all students
who want to be in the club. A sign-up sheet will be available in the School Office beginning August
12. After August 26, we'll determine how many sessions we can have, and assign students to them.
All meetings of the club will be on Wednesdays and we plan to begin the first session on September 7.
There will be several changes in the club this year.
First, we would like parents who are picking up students to come at 3:00 PM rather than 3:20 PM.
The reason for this time change is that many students grow tired of playing chess after 1 hour and they
start looking for something else to do in the classroom, which interferes with the chess instruction of
others. If students are still playing when their parents arrive, then it's the parent's choice: whether to
continue the game or break it off. In any case, the coaches, at least PY and Jerry, will remain until all
students have gone.
Secondly, we'd like to start a program of tutoring for those students new to the game of chess. It is
very difficult to teach beginning students in a regular club session. The tutoring will be one on one, i.e.,
1 coach - 1 student, and we will cover whatever the student needs. We can't say much about the details
except that these meetings cannot be on Wednesday afternoons. Each month, we will determine which
days PY and Jerry have available, and then we will make individual arrangements with particular students.
The meetings will begin at 3:00 PM and last a short time for the younger students and longer for
the older students. We also don't know yet where the meetings will be, but we won't need much in the
way of space, just a table.
After the signup sheets have been completed, we will know who could benefit from this tutoring,
and we’ll inform them by e-mail of the times and place where the tutoring can take place.
The club is open to students from grades 1 thru 8; but if you cannot sit quietly for an hour at the end
