Faith in Action - Blessing Bags

April 14, 2026
By Heather McElroy, Communication Coordinator

As the first-grader leans in, he carefully tucks one last item into an almost-full plastic bag. His small hands press it gently into place, making sure everything fits just right. Around the room, classmates are doing the same as they work with intention and with care.

At Saint Thomas More Catholic School, this is what it looks like when faith comes to life.

As part of living out our Catholic mission, every student has taken part in creating “Blessing Bags” for those in need. Gifts prepared with prayer, compassion, and a growing awareness of others.

With each item placed inside, our students pause to pray.

As socks are added, they reflect on the comfort of something as simple as warm, dry feet.
As snacks go in, they recognize that what feels like a small treat to them may be a full meal for someone else.
As toiletries are packed, they think about dignity, cleanliness, and the simple human desire to feel refreshed.

Before the bag is sealed, each student includes a handwritten note with words and drawings of encouragement and hope.

After praying over the bags, students take them home and place them in their family cars so they're ready for the moment when they may encounter someone in need. A stoplight becomes more than just a pause in the day. It becomes an opportunity to “reach out to the world as the hands of Christ,” just as our mission calls us to do.

And perhaps most beautifully, the impact is not one-sided. When asked what it felt like to create these Blessing Bags, our students said:

“Joy and happiness.”
“I'm very, like, happy to see them have all the stuff that they need.”
“It made me feel kinda sad and kinda happy.”
“I felt so excited and happy that I did it because I have things that I need and they don’t, and now they have some things.”
“I love sharing with other people.”
“Joyful.”
“It made me feel like I’m a good person.”
“It felt good.”
“It made me feel like I wanted to give it to them straight away.”
“Grateful to help the people who need these things.”

Their words express what we hope every child comes to understand. Giving doesn’t just help others. It transforms us, too.
