Make Mercy Your Family's Way of Life

February 19, 2025
By Kelly Marriott, Religion Coordinator

Mercy is showing kindness, compassion, and forgiveness, even when others may not deserve it. Taught early, mercy becomes a way of life. Fill your family’s year with the compassion and kindness of this virtue:

Foster kindness. Grab chances to be kind. Teach youngsters to pitch in without being asked. Allow someone to cut in line. Walk away from an argument. Hug a sad friend.
Forgive quickly. Jesus said, “If you forgive others their [sins], your heavenly Father will forgive you” (Matthew 6:14). Followers of Jesus forgive even before we are asked. Better still, forgive as God forgives: fully and fast.
Practice mercy. Choose a corporal or spiritual work of mercy and perform it as a family. Feed the hungry at a soup kitchen, give gently used clothing to a shelter, pray for the dead.
Pray for mercy. Prayer is powerful. Together, pray, "Lord I am a sinner; come with your mercy.” Also, pray a Chaplet of Divine Mercy, a short, comforting prayer that can be said on regular Rosary beads.

Three Ways to Welcome God into a Busy Home

May 07, 2024
By Kelly Marriott, Religion Coordinator

Welcoming God into your home can transform it into a sanctuary of love and faith. Try these meaningful ways to invite His presence into your daily family life:

  1. Display heavenly reminders: Adorn your home with sacred art, crucifxes, and statues of saints. These visual symbols serve as constant reminders of God’s presence and love. Encourage each family member, especially children, to choose a favorite and visit it daily, building a personal, visual connection to their faith.
  2. Integrate Prayer: Begin and end your day with family prayer, such as a morning blessing of protection and bedtime prayers of peace. Say grace before meals and pray the Angelus. Praying together
    also solidifies your family's bond.
  3. Perform acts of service: Encourage acts of service and kindness. Children can take on extra chores, volunteer at church, gather and donate clothes or toys.

These actions reflect the love of the Holy Trinity and make your home a welcoming place for Jesus. By making God the center of your home, you create a vibrant domestic church.
